Calcium

Calcium

Calcium is important to build and help maintain strong healthy bones and teeth, and plays a role in muscle and nerve function. Adequate calcium intake can prevent or reduce the risk of osteoporosis (a condition, where calcium is lost from the bones, making the bones weaker, fragile, and more prone to fractures).

How can I keep my bones healthy?

  1. Most dairy products contain calcium ie milk, yogurt, cheese, calcium fortified soy milks, however, it is also found in Uncle Tobys Calcium Plus cereal and John West have recently produced a calcium rich tuna. How’s that for choice!
  2. Keeping active and include weight bearing exercises. Additionally, it helps to improve balance, coordination and flexibility.
  3. Adequate vitamin D is needed to improve the absorption of calcium, found in sunlight, oily fish or fortified milk and margarine.
  4. Reduce high caffeine or salt intake, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption as these factors interfere with calcium absorption.
