Reading Nutrition Labels

Nutrition Labels

Understanding nutrition labels can be challenging. There's a lot of information there, so knowing what to look for when selecting products can be a bit confusing. No need to worry, we are here to help! We have put together a list of our top tips to help you navigate the nutrition label and make healthier choices where possible.

Nutrition Labels

The nutrition information panel contains the following information:

  • The serving size and number of serves per package
  • Nutrients are listed in the serve size and per 100 g. When comparing similar products its always best to look at the per 100g column.

You will find the following components on the information panel

  • Energy (kilojoules or calories)
  • Protein
  • Total fat and saturated fat
  • Total carbohydrate and sugars
  • Sodium
  • Dietary fibre (may not always be present)
  • Micronutrients such as any vitamins and minerals present

Ingredients are listed in the order they appear in the product. If saturated fat, sugar or salt are listed within the first 3 ingredients, consider finding an alternative.
